We created a compelling brand that resonates with its audiences and differentiates Colchester from its competitors. This was brought to life via the brand new website.

The Problem

The Colchester BID team wanted to redefine how Colchester positions itself and a consumer-facing website was identified as a vital channel in communicating with residents, visitors within a 25-mile radius, students and people working in the town. Colchester is renowned for its famous history but equally excited about its future. Our brief was to create a brand and website that was truly reflective of this.


The Solution

A brand workshop was undertaken to establish the direction of travel for the new brand. IN Colchester was developed from this process, putting Colchester at the heart of the brand name whilst indicating the geographical position. We developed a brand personality that’s approachable, friendly and trustworthy, distinctive and surprising, quirky and in the know; a real advocate for Colchester.

This culminated in a very visual brand style with an emphasis on bright, bold photography with a mix of typography and confident colours.

The new consumer-facing website was built on our own platform - DestinationCore, specifically designed for place marketing. During our initial research, we identified that there are 2.6 million monthly online searches within Essex for “things to do near me”. This is a huge volume of traffic which IN Colchester should take a share of and was a key consideration which has informed both the site’s build and the content that’s since been developed.

The site is now being maintained by the BID team and looks as good today as it did on launch, demonstrating the success of the framework we created and our DestinationCore platform.
